Grand Theft Auto V had a lot of controversy surrounding it when initially released and still has a lot today, the reason around the controversy is the graphic display of violence shown throughout the game. The most notable scene that displays this is "The torture scene" where one of the main characters "Trevor" was assigned to torture another character and did so in graphic and violent ways which seemed to be what sparked to controversy around the game because it made some players uneasy to watch and to act out even through a video game. This scene also led to censorship of the scene in Japanese versions of the game and the companies Target and Kmart also pulled the game off the shelves because of the graphic violence. Despite all the controversy surrounding the game it still was released without a refusal of classification and given the "R18" rating by the Australian classification board and still remains a high grossing and popular video game all around the world.
